Whether a tattoo has faded, no longer fits your life or was a hasty decision, laser treatment is the most widely used way to lighten or remove it. At PS Dental Care, Narela Mandi, we first assess your tattoo and skin, then explain how many sessions you may need, how much fading is realistic and what the risks are.

Short, intense pulses of laser light are absorbed by the tattoo ink and break it into tiny fragments. Over the following weeks your body's immune system clears these fragments, so the tattoo fades gradually. It cannot be done in one session, because only part of the ink is cleared each time.
Some inks, especially white, pink or skin-coloured tattoos, can darken after laser treatment, and this is checked with a small test patch when needed. Many tattoos can be faded a lot, but complete removal is not guaranteed.
| Step | Details |
|---|---|
| Consultation | We look at the tattoo, ink colours, your skin type and medical history, and explain what is realistic. |
| Preparation | The area is cleaned, protective eyewear is worn, and numbing cream may be used. |
| Laser session | Quick pulses of laser light are passed over the tattoo. It feels like a hot snap or rubber band flick. |
| Aftercare | A cool compress and ointment are used, and you receive written aftercare instructions. |
| Between sessions | Sessions are spaced several weeks apart so the skin can heal and the body can clear the ink. |
Redness, swelling, scabbing and blistering are common for several days. Less commonly, treatment can cause lighter or darker skin patches, infection or scarring. The risk is lower when the skin is assessed properly and aftercare is followed. Tell us about medicines, pregnancy, keloid scarring, skin infections or a recent tan before treatment.
Most people compare it to a rubber band snapping against the skin, and it can feel stronger over bony areas. Numbing cream can help.
It depends on the tattoo's size, colours, depth and age, and on your skin. Many tattoos need several sessions, and some need more than ten. Your doctor will give you an estimate after examining it.
No. Many tattoos fade a lot, but some colours and deep tattoos may leave a faint shadow or mark, and complete removal cannot be guaranteed.
